Tomato

Tomatoes are a New World fruit and were likely brought to India by the Portuguese and grown in small quantities. But it wasn't until British colonialism that they became popularized. Today it is hard to picture Indian cuisine without tomatoes. We make many red sauce dishes, like paneer makhani, Tomato Dal, and one of my favorites, Tomato Chutney.
